Two boys charged with escape from secure facility without outside help

Two 16-year-old boys have been charged with escaping from a secure juvenile detention center in Denmark. The teenagers fled from the Bakkegården institution near Nykøbing Sjælland on Wednesday afternoon but were recaptured later that day. Mid- and West Zealand Police confirmed the charges and stated that the boys were solely responsible for their escape, with no indication of outside help.

One of the boys is a Swedish national facing charges in Denmark for allegedly committing murder for payment. He is scheduled to appear in court in Lyngby in August for that case. Both teenagers were being held in secure custody at the Bakkegården facility because of their young age, as they are not permitted to be held in adult detention centers. The institution is designed for young offenders and has various security measures in place.

The escape occurred when the boys entered an unauthorized area and subsequently breached a fence. Police received the report of the escape around 3:50 PM on Wednesday. Several hours later, officers apprehended the teenagers at Tølløse Station, acting on information that they might be there. Police have not released specific details about the method of escape, citing ongoing investigations.

Bakkegården, operated by Region Sjælland, is located in Annebergparken and has 15 secure places. The facility features barred windows, locked exterior doors, and fenced outdoor areas, along with video surveillance, according to its website. The incident highlights the challenges of managing secure facilities for minors.
