Two Chilean police officers arrested for killing rapper during traffic stop

Two Carabineros officers have been arrested and will be charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a rapper during a traffic stop in Chile's La Araucanía region. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 17 in Padre Las Casas, involved the death of Gabriel Utreras, known in the hip-hop community as 'Vegetal.'

The confrontation began during a routine traffic control. According to Carabineros, a vehicle driven by Utreras was stopped, and a subsequent pursuit ensued. The police statement indicated that one officer, feeling his physical integrity was threatened, discharged his service weapon, striking the driver.

The Public Ministry has assigned a prosecutor from the Human Rights Unit to investigate the case, working alongside the PDI's Homicide Brigade. The arrest of the officers marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into Utreras's death, raising questions about police conduct during traffic stops.
