Two Dead in Chile as Storm Triggers Floods

At least two people have died in Chile due to floods caused by a powerful storm that struck the central and southern parts of the country, authorities reported Saturday. The extreme weather led to multiple evacuation orders and warnings in several regions.

In the Los Ríos region in the south, two individuals died when a tree fell on their vehicle, according to Deputy Interior Minister Máximo Pavez. The National Office for Disaster Prevention and Response stated that nearly 350 people suffered injuries or property damage. More than 2,000 residents were cut off from the outside world, primarily due to rivers overflowing their banks.

Over 180,000 households were left without electricity, reported the biobiochile.cl portal. The office issued a total of 13 evacuation alerts, warning of floods and winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. Several municipalities in the Maule and Los Lagos regions declared a state of emergency.

Chile experienced severe storms in July as well, which resulted in 13 deaths and damaged at least 4,000 homes. The current storm has brought further devastation to areas already impacted by previous weather events.
