Two Dead, Seven Injured in Cairo Mall Fire After Elevator Crash

At least two people died and seven were injured in a fire that erupted in a shopping center in the eastern part of Egypt's capital, Cairo, on Thursday, August 13. Several others suffered from smoke inhalation.

According to security sources and local media, the fire occurred in the New Cairo area. It is believed to have been triggered by a faulty elevator that crashed into a restaurant inside the commercial complex, as reported by EFE via Agerpres. In addition to the two fatalities, seven other individuals were wounded, some due to asphyxiation, as indicated by sources and the Egyptian publication Al Masry al Youm.

Emergency teams extinguished the fire and evacuated the building. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes and circumstances of the incident. This tragedy comes just two days after another deadly fire in Cairo, caused by a gas cylinder explosion in a restaurant, which claimed at least five lives. Official data shows Egypt recorded nearly 47,000 accidental fires in 2024, with Cairo province being the most affected area due to high population density and intense commercial activity.
