Two firefighters dead after Greek helicopters collide battling blazes

A midair collision between two Greek firefighting helicopters battling a wind-driven wildfire west of Athens resulted in the deaths of two firefighters, highlighting the extreme dangers faced in Europe's escalating wildfire emergency. Footage captured the moment one aircraft crashed to the ground.

The incident occurred as powerful winds propelled flames deeper into the Attica region, forcing further evacuations and threatening communities and an industrial district near Megara. The gale-force winds also hampered firefighting efforts, preventing aircraft from collecting water.

The two helicopters, Bell models each carrying a two-person crew, were operating in the Psatha area. Authorities confirmed two of the four individuals aboard perished, while the crew of the second helicopter survived. The nationalities of the deceased were not immediately identified.

This tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of Europe's worst fire season in recent memory. France is grappling with a massive blaze that forced over 200,000 people to flee, while Spain also contends with significant fires. Together, these incidents have displaced hundreds of thousands across the continent, straining emergency services.

Scientists note that human-caused climate change is significantly increasing the likelihood of such extreme fire weather conditions. Europe has warmed at more than twice the global average since the 1980s, contributing to a growing wildfire threat that has seen over 10,000 square kilometers burn in the past year.
