Two Frankfurt Airport Employees Die of Malaria; Officials Suspect Mosquitoes Arrived on Aircraft

A rare outbreak of malaria at Frankfurt Airport has resulted in the deaths of two employees and infected six others. Four additional airport workers who contracted the disease have since recovered. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's disease control agency, confirmed the infections occurred between July 4 and July 6.

Authorities are investigating the cause, with a leading theory pointing to mosquitoes that may have arrived at the airport via passenger aircraft. This phenomenon is known as 'airport malaria,' where mosquitoes carrying the disease disembark from planes and potentially transmit the illness locally. Such occurrences are highly unusual in Germany, where malaria is typically only contracted by individuals returning from endemic regions.

The RKI noted that early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing severe illness or death from malaria. In light of this incident, Frankfurt Airport has advised its employees to inform their doctors about their work environment if they experience any symptoms. Mosquito traps have been installed throughout the airport, and further analysis, including DNA identification, will be conducted to determine the exact species and origin of the mosquitoes involved.
