Two-hour operation confirms no explosives; highway traffic halted

A bomb scare on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Narayanganj's Sonargaon caused a two-hour security operation and halted traffic for about 30 minutes. A locked bag left unattended at the United Filling Station in the Nayapara area sparked the alert.

Law enforcement agencies, including local police, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit, were mobilized after the bag was reported around 6:30 pm yesterday. They cordoned off the area and initiated a security operation, leading to long queues of vehicles on both sides of the highway.

After a thorough examination using specialized equipment, bomb disposal experts opened the bag around 2:15 am today. Fortunately, no explosives or bomb materials were found. The bag contained a national identity card belonging to Mosammat Rekha Begum, a professional driving licence in her husband's name, a purse, and torn clothing.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi confirmed that the alert was a false alarm. Police are now investigating why the bag was left at the filling station. Traffic on the highway resumed after the all-clear was given.
