Two injured as trailer falls from Anambra bridge, crashes into vehicles

A trailer carrying a 40-foot container plummeted from the New Parts, Nkpor Bridge in Anambra State, Nigeria, crashing into four other vehicles on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. on the Onitsha–Awka Expressway, resulted in two individuals sustaining minor injuries, while four others escaped the crash unharmed. No fatalities were reported.

The accident occurred when the driver of the trailer suddenly lost brake as he was descending the bridge. He lost control, veered off the bridge, and crashed into other vehicles beneath the bridge.

The fallen trailer blocked the entire stretch of the road, causing hours of traffic gridlock. Eyewitnesses reported that the trailer's driver lost control after experiencing brake failure while descending the bridge. The trailer veered off the bridge and crashed into vehicles below. Fortunately, passengers in a shuttle bus beneath the bridge had already fled before the trailer fell, though some sustained minor injuries while escaping.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the accident, stating it involved a Mercedes-Benz articulated truck, two commercial shuttle buses, and an Audi Volkswagen car. The FRSC received a distress call shortly after the crash and dispatched a rescue team. Preliminary investigations suggest brake failure as the cause of the accident.
