Two killed, three detained in Mazatlán violence despite security operations

Mazatlán, a popular tourist destination, is grappling with persistent violence despite an intensified security operation. In separate incidents, two individuals were killed and three others wounded, highlighting the ongoing challenges in maintaining public safety.

During routine patrols, army elements engaged and detained three armed men traveling in a vehicle. A search revealed an arsenal including four automatic rifles, a Barrett-50 rifle, 69 loaded magazines, 1,823 rounds of ammunition, illicit substances, and 12 improvised explosive devices. This significant seizure underscores the presence of heavily armed criminal elements in the region.

In one incident, the body of an unidentified man with gunshot wounds was discovered in a rural area. Separately, a 49-year-old businessman, identified as Valentín “N,” was fatally shot while driving in the Real Pacífico neighborhood. He was intercepted by armed assailants who opened fire on his vehicle.

Tragically, a woman was killed and three other diners were injured in an armed attack inside the traditional El Habal restaurant. Preliminary reports suggest assailants arrived in a vehicle, entered the restaurant, and opened fire on patrons. The woman is believed to have been an unintended victim of the attack.

Federal forces have cordoned off the restaurant area as authorities await forensic teams to process the scene. The ongoing violence casts a shadow over the security efforts in Mazatlán, particularly during the holiday season.
