Two pilots jailed for endangering migrants on Channel crossings

Two men have been sentenced to prison for piloting overcrowded small boats across the English Channel, endangering the lives of dozens of migrants. The convictions highlight the ongoing efforts by British authorities to combat human smuggling operations.

Omar Heidari, 34, an Afghan national, received a two-year sentence for steering a dinghy carrying 95 people to the UK in June. Canterbury Crown Court heard that the vessel was dangerously overcrowded, with some passengers hanging their legs over the sides and many not wearing life jackets. Manas Yuk, an 18-year-old Sudanese national, was sentenced to 18 months in youth detention for piloting a boat with 81 people, including children, just days earlier under similar perilous conditions.

These sentences mean 10 individuals have now been convicted under a law enacted in January that targets those who risk others' safety by piloting small boats. The Home Office emphasized that Heidari endangered the largest number of lives among those sentenced so far. The men were found guilty of endangerment and arriving in the UK without valid entry clearance.

Home Office minister Anna Turley stated that the sentences demonstrate the government's resolve to "crackdown on criminal smuggling gangs." She warned that anyone who risks lives by bringing illegal migrants to British shores on dangerous small boats will face justice. The report notes that small boat crossings have become the most common method for illegal entry into the UK since 2020, with the vessels often being overcrowded and lacking adequate safety equipment.
