Two pro-Israel candidates to vie for Florida governor's seat

Florida voters will face a choice between two candidates with strong pro-Israel credentials in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly emerged victorious in their respective primaries on Tuesday, securing the nominations to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis.

The Associated Press called both races shortly after polls closed, with Donalds capturing 48.6% of the Republican primary vote and Jolly winning 61.5% of the Democratic primary vote. Jolly, a former Republican U.S. House Representative, has since distanced himself from the party and aligned with the Democrats.

Donalds has represented Florida in Washington since 2019. Governor DeSantis, who has held office since 2019, is unable to run for another term due to state term limits. His successor will inherit the role of a governor recognized for his firm support of Israel and opposition to the boycott, divestment, sanctions movement.

DeSantis has a notable record of pro-Israel actions, including being the first Florida governor to visit the West Bank and influencing Airbnb to reverse a policy on listings in West Bank settlements. He has also championed legislation protecting Florida's Jewish community from antisemitism and celebrated Israel's 75th Independence Day.

Donalds, who could become Florida's first Black governor, has received an endorsement from President Trump and expressed support for strong action against Iran, stating, "Peace is achieved through strength, not weakness." While Donalds voted against the Antisemitism Awareness Act in Congress, citing concerns about its rushed nature and unclear language, he has pledged unwavering support for Israel and its Jewish neighbors.
