Two suspects detained after arson attack near Munich defense firms

Two people have been placed in custody after incendiary devices were allegedly thrown from a car at a construction site near several defense-related companies in Munich.

Police arrested the 28-year-old woman and 38-year-old man at a petrol station after the attack. A witness saw what happened and alerted police. One device started a fire that officers extinguished, while a second was defused. Nobody was injured, and authorities reported no major damage.

The suspects face allegations of property damage and attempted arson, according to Munich prosecutors and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office. Investigators searched three apartments in the Munich district and seized numerous items, which they are now examining. An LKA spokesman said there were no other suspects so far.

The construction site is near the headquarters of Rohde & Schwarz, a security technology company with a military division, and Helsing, a drone maker that produces AI-controlled combat drones and supplies Ukraine’s armed forces. Authorities have not established whether either company was the target.

Investigators and Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann nevertheless believe the attack had a political background. Munich prosecutors took over the case because the office houses Bavaria’s central unit for combating extremism and terrorism.
