Two UML leaders vie for Bagmati chief minister post

The CPN-UML party is set to lead the Bagmati provincial government following a power-sharing agreement with the Nepali Communist Party (NCP). This arrangement designates the UML to head governments in Koshi, Bagmati, and Lumbini, while the NCP will lead in Karnali and Sudurpaschim.

Within the UML's Bagmati chapter, two prominent leaders have emerged as contenders for the chief minister's post: Jagannath Thapaliya, the current parliamentary party leader, and Kiran Thapa, a former provincial health minister. Both have been actively lobbying the party's central leadership in Kathmandu for support.

Parliamentary party leader Thapaliya is naturally a strong contender for the chief minister’s position. Kiran Thapa has also claimed the post, citing his performance as provincial health minister.

Thapaliya, who previously served as Bagmati's finance minister, is considered a strong candidate due to his position as parliamentary party leader. An earlier agreement with the Nepali Congress had also slated him for the role. Thapa, however, is also a significant contender, reportedly due to his influence within the party and his past performance as health minister.

The UML has not yet announced its final decision. The party's strength in the provincial assembly has slightly decreased, with two lawmakers resigning. The formation of the new government was prompted by the previous Congress-led administration losing its majority. The UML is currently working to secure support from the NCP and other parties.
