Two Women Die in Highway Crash During Peru's Fiestas Patrias

A tragic traffic accident on Peru's Pan-American North highway in the Áncash region claimed the lives of two women and left two others injured. The incident occurred on July 28, during the Fiestas Patrias holiday celebrations. The vehicle carrying four occupants veered off the road, rolling multiple times before coming to a stop. The deceased have been identified as Mariela Davis Sanjines and Jovana Flores, while Brayan Falla Jiménez and Aisel Davis Sanjines sustained injuries and were taken to a medical center. Police and public prosecutors are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Peruvian authorities have issued a strong reminder to drivers to respect speed limits, avoid reckless maneuvers, and ensure they are not driving under the influence of alcohol or fatigue, especially with increased traffic during the long holiday weekend. They also stressed the importance of checking vehicle mechanical conditions before travel. So far in 2026, traffic accidents have resulted in 1,881 fatalities across Peru, with 309 of those deaths occurring on national highways, according to the PNP Traffic Directorate. Excessive speed remains a primary contributor to these accidents.
