Typhoon Barway May Become Super Typhoon, Threatening Taiwan Next Week

Taiwan is bracing for a week of dramatic weather shifts as Typhoon Barway, the ninth typhoon of the season, churns in the Pacific. The Central Weather Bureau forecasts that Barway could develop into a super typhoon as it moves northwestward.

Forecasters predict that the typhoon will be closest to Taiwan between Friday and Saturday of the following week. During this period, its outer bands are expected to bring significant wind and rain to the island. The bureau is urging the public to make necessary preparations for potential typhoon impacts.

While Barway is currently over 4,000 kilometers away, environmental conditions are favorable for its development. The bureau's "Weather News" Facebook page noted that the typhoon's path could bring it near Taiwan's east coast in the latter half of next week, with a trend toward turning northward. However, significant uncertainties remain in long-range forecasts, with potential errors exceeding 1,000 kilometers for predictions more than ten days out.

In addition to Barway, a tropical depression (TD09) is forming in the northern South China Sea. While currently disorganized, it could potentially develop into a typhoon and affect Hainan Island and the southern Chinese coast around the same time Barway approaches Taiwan. The bureau also warned of potential long waves along the northeastern coast and at the southern tip of Taiwan starting Wednesday, advising caution for those near the sea.
