Typhoon Bavi Approaches Taiwan; Agricultural Disaster Prevention Advice Issued

As Typhoon Bavi approaches Taiwan, the Tainan District Agricultural Research Extension Station has issued crucial disaster prevention advice to farmers. While the typhoon's exact path remains uncertain, authorities are urging preparedness across all regions to mitigate potential damage.

The station emphasizes the importance of clearing and maintaining drainage ditches to ensure smooth water flow, especially in low-lying areas where backup water pumps should be readily available. For facilities such as greenhouses and net houses, farmers are advised to inspect structural integrity and anchoring of covering materials. During strong winds, greenhouse doors, skylights, and side windows should be securely closed.

For vegetable and melon crops, which are sensitive to waterlogging, farmers should promptly clear surrounding drainage systems. Any crops ready for harvest should be collected as soon as possible to reduce losses. For those harvested during the rainy season, storage in well-ventilated or refrigerated areas is recommended to prevent spoilage. Unharvested vegetables can be covered with netting to reduce direct impact from rain, provided the netting is securely fastened against strong winds.

Fruit tree growers are advised to reinforce trellises and secure structures to prevent collapse from heavy rain. For those cultivating in facilities, ensuring proper sealing of doors and windows is critical to prevent water infiltration and subsequent disease spread. Pre-positioning water pumps within facilities is also recommended. Mature fruit trees should be harvested and stored appropriately, with supply managed according to market demand. For unripe fruits, such as wax apples, supporting branches with stakes or ropes is advised to prevent fruit drop or breakage.

For orchards on slopes, soil and water conservation measures, including covering with plastic sheeting, weed mats, or straw, are recommended to prevent root exposure and plant lodging. Flatland orchards require clearing of drainage ditches to prevent water accumulation. Following heavy rainfall, increased attention to pest and disease control is necessary. Farmers should remove fallen fruit, broken branches, and leaves from fields to reduce pathogen spread. The station directs farmers to the "Plant Protection Information System" for approved pesticides for specific crops.
