Tyre burst kills three on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

Three people died and 15 others were injured when a commercial bus burst into flames after a tyre failure on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Thursday near Iyana Egbado in Ewekoro Local Government Area, Ogun State.

According to an eyewitness, the bus tyre burst while in motion and somersaulted into the bush and burst into flames.

The Mazda bus, carrying 20 passengers, reportedly suffered a tyre burst while in motion. This caused the driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to somersault into a nearby bush before igniting.

Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the details, stating that 17 passengers were rescued alive. The injured were taken to General Hospital, Ifo, while the deceased were transported to the morgue there. TRACE extended condolences to the families of the victims.

Motorists are again admonished to avoid excessive speed, tokunbo tyres and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before setting out on any journey in view of its attendant consequences.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, also confirmed the fatalities and the cause of the accident. Police are investigating the incident, and TRACE has urged motorists to avoid excessive speeding and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, particularly regarding tyre quality.

Three occupants were burnt to death in the inferno, while fifteen others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital, Ifo, for medical treatment.
