Tzu Chi Scammed Out of NT$10.6 Billion; Tsai Ing-wen Urges Trust in Professionals

Former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has spoken out following revelations that the Tzu Chi Foundation allegedly lost NT$10.6 billion (approximately $320 million USD) in a vaccine procurement scam. Tsai stressed that during times of crisis, the public should rely on professional expertise rather than placing trust in any single political party.

In a Facebook post, Tsai recalled the severe global pandemic and the urgent need for vaccines, which represented more than just a commodity but a symbol of hope for returning to normalcy. She acknowledged the risks taken by frontline workers and the efforts of various organizations, including religious and private groups, that sought to help Taiwan secure vaccines faster. Tsai expressed gratitude to all who participated in and supported the pandemic response.

Tsai revealed that the vaccine procurement process was more challenging than publicly perceived, especially amid global supply shortages and intense competition. She emphasized the government's responsibility to manage national resources, public health, and trust with utmost care. Every document, source, and transaction required rigorous verification to seize opportunities while preventing deception.

Acknowledging that Tzu Chi is also a victim in this alleged fraud case, Tsai stated that the matter is now in the judicial system. "We respect the judicial investigation and expect the relevant facts to be clarified, and the victims' rights to be protected," she said. Tsai reiterated that the pandemic demonstrated Taiwan's societal willingness to help and share burdens. She urged for calmness, professionalism, and institutional oversight, especially during the most difficult and urgent moments, thanking everyone who worked diligently during that challenging period.
