U.S. Ambassador: Romania's Military Capabilities Remain Strong

U.S. Ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg emphasized that military strength is about capabilities, not just troop numbers, assuring that Romania's NATO capabilities remain robust. Speaking ahead of a reception celebrating the U.S. National Day, Nirenberg reaffirmed Washington's commitment to the alliance. He noted Romania's significant defense spending, placing it among the top nations allocating 2.5% of GDP to defense and supporting NATO's goal of 5% GDP allocation.

Deterrence is not about the number of troops, but about capabilities, and the capabilities here in Romania, in the context of NATO, remain strong and I believe they will be even stronger.

Describing Romania as a key strategic player situated between Asia and Europe, Nirenberg pointed to its potential to become a transformative force in energy production, citing its educated workforce. He also underscored Romania's leading role in bilateral defense cooperation and its crucial position in the Black Sea region, a vital area where Europe and Asia converge. The ambassador acknowledged the strong reactions to drone incidents in the region and Romania's role in facilitating Ukrainian grain transit to avert a global food crisis.

Romania is among the top countries allocating 2.5% of GDP to defense and among the states that have supported NATO to adopt the 5% of GDP quota for defense.

Reflecting on American values, Nirenberg defined freedom as the most American principle, transcending origin, race, or background. He stated that everyone in the U.S. has the opportunity and freedom to pursue their path, drawing a connection to the inspiration this principle offered Romanians 36 years ago. The reception in Bucharest commemorated the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
