U.S. ambassador to Israel accuses British government of antisemitism

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee accused Britain’s government of antisemitism after Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the situation in Gaza as “horrific.”

“The British have lost their minds. The hatred of Jews by their government knows neither limits nor facts,” Huckabee wrote on X, responding to a video released by Miliband. Such criticism of Britain, one of Washington’s closest allies, is unusual from a U.S. official.

Miliband, whose parents were Jewish refugees in Britain, said in the video that the British government had to act after a meeting on Gaza. “Frankly, what is happening is horrific. You know, the accounts people have given me, of medicines being blocked, of children dying while waiting for vital equipment,” he said.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry accused Miliband of ignoring the facts and producing a video for public opinion. It said 22,500 tonnes of medical supplies had entered Gaza since a ceasefire took effect in October 2025 under U.S. pressure. The truce sharply reduced violence, but Israel continues to strike what it describes as Hamas targets. Hamas’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, triggered the war in Gaza.

Tom Fletcher, the United Nations humanitarian chief, said in June that aid deliveries remained insufficient even though more assistance was entering the Palestinian territory. Humanitarian organizations say Israeli restrictions on products considered capable of military use, including prostheses, as well as restrictions on motor oil and spare parts, have made it difficult to operate hospitals and other medical facilities. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said his predecessor, Keir Starmer, was too conciliatory toward Israel. His government is considering measures in response to increased settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, a step Israel said would trigger retaliation.
