U.S. and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as CENTCOM Confirms Revolutionary Guard Targets

The United States and Iran have exchanged fresh attacks, with Washington striking Iranian targets and Tehran firing missiles toward a U.S. military base in Jordan. The escalation brought another round of direct confrontation between the two countries.

U.S. Central Command said American forces began attacking targets belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at noon Eastern time on the first day of the month. It said the operation responded to recent Iranian attempts to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and attack U.S. forces deployed in the Middle East.

President Donald Trump said the United States was striking Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz. He described the operation as extensive and said it was retaliation for what he called Iran’s failed attempt to lay mines in the waterway. Trump also said eight missiles fired toward a military base in Jordan had been intercepted.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed its ballistic missile attack on the U.S. base caused heavy American casualties. Two U.S. officials told Reuters that the attack caused no casualties. Jordan’s armed forces later said its air defenses had intercepted and destroyed 13 ballistic missiles that entered Jordanian airspace. Ten were destroyed, while three fell in remote areas away from population centers.

Trump warned that the United States would take more severe action if Iran retaliated against what he called America’s “justified action.” He also said Washington was preparing an offensive of “very large scale.”
