U.S. Blacklists 43 Chinese Companies Over Xinjiang Forced Labor Concerns

The White House has expanded its efforts to combat forced labor by adding 43 Chinese companies to a blacklist. Announced on July 31, the move targets businesses suspected of using forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. This latest action, implemented under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), significantly increases the number of entities restricted from importing goods into the United States. The newly added companies operate in diverse industries such as seafood, gold, copper, transportation infrastructure, aluminum, tomatoes, cotton, apparel, and frozen foods. Notably, Hunan Er-Kang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a major capacitor manufacturer, is among those listed, with U.S. authorities citing its procurement of chemical foils and raw materials from Xinjiang. This expansion marks the largest addition of companies since the UFLPA's enactment in 2021. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin intercepting imports from these firms starting August 3. Officials stated that importers attempting to circumvent these measures will face legal consequences. China has consistently denied allegations of forced labor and human rights abuses in Xinjiang, characterizing such accusations as politically motivated fabrications. Beijing maintains that its laws strictly prohibit forced labor and condemns the U.S. actions as interference in its internal affairs.
