U.S. considers Cuba's reforms 'superficial'

The United States State Department has characterized Cuba's recently announced economic reforms as "superficial smoke signals," asserting that the measures are insufficient to address the island's economic challenges.

A spokesperson for the State Department told AFP that the gradual economic reforms, unveiled Thursday, are "modest, overdue, and ultimately superficial smoke signals from the Cuban regime." This assessment comes as Cuba introduced 176 measures aimed at boosting its market economy, facing significant pressure from U.S. policies, including an oil embargo.

These reforms represent the most substantial shift in Cuba's economic model since the adoption of communism nearly 70 years ago. However, Washington views them as a "typical strategy" to create a false impression of commitment to change, only to reverse them once the regime's total control is perceived to be threatened.
