U.S. Has Shot Down About 100 Cartel Drones at Southern Border, Fox News Reports

The U.S. military shot down approximately 100 suspected cartel drones at the southern border in August alone, Fox News reported. The disclosure marks the first time the Pentagon has revealed how frequently it has used counter-unmanned-aircraft technology in the area.

Each drone shootdown was coordinated in advance with the Mexican military and border authorities, part of a wider U.S. strategy built around layered counter-drone defenses rather than a single “miracle” system. On Aug. 28, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command said a laser system had downed three drones linked to Mexican drug cartels near the Texas-Mexico border. The drones were classified as a physical threat to military personnel and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

Mexico said the three aircraft belonged to migrant traffickers who used them to monitor U.S. authorities. It stressed that the shootdowns occurred on U.S. soil during parallel, or “mirror,” operations conducted by forces from both countries.
