U.S. Southern Command and Colombia Forge United Front Against Narco-Trafficking

The United States Southern Command (Southcom) and Colombia are set to forge a unified front against narco-terrorist organizations that pose a threat to regional security. Southcom Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan confirmed this initiative following a three-day official visit to Colombia, marking the first visit by a high-ranking U.S. official since the inauguration of President Abelardo de la Espriella.

During his visit, Gen. Donovan inspected the Tolemaida Military Fort, Colombia's largest military installation, to assess the operational status of the Colombian Army Aviation. He reiterated the bilateral commitment to combatting criminal networks across the hemisphere. "The dedication of the Colombian forces we were with this week is unparalleled," Donovan stated. "By forging a unified front, we will dismantle narco-terrorist operations, eliminate their leadership, and eradicate their violent networks that threaten our shared security and sovereignty."

This renewed security cooperation is a key element of President De la Espriella's strategy to re-establish a strong security alliance with Washington, following a period of strained relations during the previous administration. Colombia has officially joined the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C), a U.S.-led platform designed to coordinate transnational operations against drug trafficking.

Colombia's Military Forces Commander, Gen. Erik Rodríguez, highlighted the importance of enhancing the military's tactical capabilities. "Strengthening and recovering these capabilities is a priority to ensure a Force with greater mobility, reach, and response. We continue to work monolithically for the security of Colombia," Rodríguez affirmed. The collaboration includes efforts to bolster operational cooperation in the volatile Pacific region, with meetings held in Tumaco between Gen. Donovan and Defense Minister Jorge Eduardo Mora.
