UAE 'firmly condemns' Iran attack on two ships in Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates has "firmly condemned" an Iranian attack on two ships linked to the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as they transited the Strait of Hormuz. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement Friday denouncing the "hostile Iranian attack" but confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The ministry characterized the targeting of commercial navigation and the use of the Strait of Hormuz for economic coercion as acts of piracy committed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The UAE asserted that these actions pose a direct threat to the region's stability, its people, and global energy security.

Abu Dhabi called on Iran to "completely and unconditionally reopen the Strait of Hormuz" to safeguard regional security and maintain the stability of the global economy and trade. The attack reportedly occurred Thursday evening, according to the WAM news agency, citing the oil company.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil transport, with approximately one-fifth of the world's oil passing through it before the start of the Middle East war. Iran has controlled passage through the strait since the conflict began, while the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. Tehran requires ships to obtain authorization and intends to impose service fees, a move strongly opposed by Washington.
