UAE makes global aviation history with GCAA’s certification of world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport

The United Arab Emirates has made aviation history with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) certifying VDX, the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport designed for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This landmark certification, officially registered under the GCAA, signals the imminent launch of commercial Air Taxi services in Dubai.

The certification of the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport is a historic achievement for the UAE and a defining moment for the future of aviation.

VDX is set to become the primary hub for Dubai's expanding Air Taxi network, which currently includes three additional vertiports under development. These facilities are being realized through a collaboration between Skyports Infrastructure and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The comprehensive GCAA assessment covered all critical aspects, including infrastructure, operations, safety management, and regulatory compliance, ensuring the vertiport meets the highest international standards.

This significant milestone solidifies the UAE's global standing in aviation, innovation, and Advanced Air Mobility. It demonstrates the nation's capacity to transform ambitious national visions into tangible, safe, and future-ready infrastructure. The certification directly supports the objectives of the "We the UAE 2031" initiative and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, fostering innovation, attracting investment, driving economic diversification, and enabling sustainable mobility solutions.

Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director General of the GCAA's Aviation Safety Affairs Sector, added that the certification of VDX signifies more than just approving a new facility; it showcases the UAE's prowess in establishing a robust regulatory framework for emerging aviation technologies.
