UAE says Iran attacked ADNOC vessel with missile in Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned what it described as an Iranian missile attack on a vessel linked to its state oil company, ADNOC, as it transited the Strait of Hormuz. The UAE accused Tehran of engaging in "acts of piracy" through this incident.

Initially, the state news agency WAM reported that an ADNOC vessel was targeted by a missile early Saturday, with the situation under control. Subsequently, the UAE Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the "hostile Iranian attack." Neither statement provided specific details regarding the tanker, its cargo, or any potential damage, and no injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath.

The UAE ministry asserted that the attack constitutes a violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution concerning freedom of navigation. It further accused Iran's Revolutionary Guards of "acts of piracy" by targeting commercial shipping and using the vital waterway as a means of economic pressure. The ministry urged Iran to cease these attacks and fully reopen the strait unconditionally.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing tensions and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy transport. ADNOC had previously reported significant impacts from what it termed "unprovoked attacks" on its personnel and assets since the start of a conflict on February 28. The company stated that 15 of its vessels have been targeted by missiles and drones while traversing the strait, leading to one fatality and 20 injuries among crew members. ADNOC did not attribute responsibility for these prior attacks in its earlier statements.
