Uber to cut thousands of jobs worldwide

Uber is cutting nearly 10% of its global workforce, or about 3,300 jobs, as the ride-sharing company tries to simplify its structure and redirect money toward growth and new technology.

The cuts will mainly affect managers and office workers. Uber plans to remove layers of management, combine smaller teams and reduce duplicated work. The number of managers is expected to fall by about 20%, although some managers will move into specialist roles instead of leaving the company.

Uber said the reorganization should lower costs and produce clearer responsibility, faster decisions and less time spent coordinating between teams. The savings will support investment in drivers, couriers and merchants, the expansion of Uber's core business, and the development of autonomous taxis, where the company competes with Waymo and Tesla.

The company has not disclosed the impact in Europe. The final number of job losses in some European countries may emerge only after consultations required under local labor rules. The changes do not affect Uber drivers and couriers, who are generally independent partners.

Uber also plans to reduce the number of offices and bring more employees back to them. About 1% of employees are expected to work fully remotely, while the rest will follow a hybrid policy requiring at least three days in the office each week. Uber said it will also stop operating in Nigeria and Uganda, after ending operations in Tanzania earlier this year. Its share price rose after the restructuring announcement.
