UC returns to winning ways, beating Cobresal ahead of Copa Libertadores clash

Universidad Católica secured a vital 2-0 victory over Cobresal, ending a winless streak and boosting their morale before a crucial Copa Libertadores fixture. The win in the 18th round of the Liga de Primera positions them with 30 points, 12 behind leaders Colo Colo.

The first half at the Claro Arena saw limited clear-cut chances for both sides. Universidad Católica's best opportunity came when Eugenio Mena's shot was blocked by Cobresal's goalkeeper Matías Olguín's face around the 35th minute.

The deadlock was broken in the second half when Diego Corral's cross deflected off Cobresal's Guillermo Pacheco into his own net in the 60th minute. Cobresal attempted to respond, but Fernando Zampedri sealed the victory with a long-range strike from nearly 40 meters in the 90+4th minute, catching Olguín off his line.

With this result, Universidad Católica now shifts focus to their Copa Libertadores campaign, facing Estudiantes de La Plata on August 11. Cobresal remains 15th with 17 points and will play Deportes Concepción next.
