Udom Emmanuel Celebrates 60th Birthday Amid Tributes and Political Nuances

Former Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State marked his 60th birthday on Saturday, July 11, receiving a flood of tributes from former members of his administration and political figures. Among those celebrating were a national spokesperson for a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and numerous supporters who lauded his life and public service.

Governor Umo Eno, Emmanuel's successor, also extended birthday wishes. This gesture carries significance as Eno defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) while Emmanuel has remained loyal to the PDP, highlighting a continued, albeit complex, political relationship.

For years, he had mastered the art of escaping birthday celebrations. This time, those who had learned from him planned even better. The hunter had finally become the hunted, and the man who delights in celebrating others found himself at the receiving end of the love and appreciation he has so generously given over the years.

Messages shared on Facebook described the former governor as a disciplined leader, mentor, and statesman whose impact extends far beyond his eight-year tenure. Tributes came from figures like Mr Ememobong, a former commissioner for information under Emmanuel, and Aniekeme Finbarr, a former media aide. Ememobong had previously resigned from Governor Eno's cabinet after refusing to defect with him to the APC.

As you are aware, Mr Emmanuel is a very private person who shies away from personal celebrations. However, reaching the age of 60 is a significant milestone, and he had previously agreed to his friends’ proposal to mark the occasion, but he has since cancelled the celebration.

In a detailed tribute titled “Udom Emmanuel @ 60: When the Hunter Became the Hunted,” Ememobong recounted how associates successfully surprised the former governor. Emmanuel has a long-standing tradition of leaving town before his birthdays to evade celebrations, frustrating friends and family. "For years, he had mastered the art of escaping birthday celebrations. This time, those who had learned from him planned even better," Ememobong wrote, noting the irony of the "hunter" becoming the "hunted."

The organizers capitalized on Emmanuel's regular attendance at a monthly church service in Lagos, surprising him at his residence the following morning. Ememobong described the former governor as "dazed, shocked and amused all at once" by the unexpected celebration. Emmanuel's media aide, Stephen Abia, had earlier stated that the former governor, a private person, had cancelled a proposed celebration, opting instead for a private retreat to reflect on leadership and nation-building.
