UEFA threatens World Cup boycott over FIFA's private investment plans

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has issued a strong warning to FIFA, threatening a unanimous boycott of all upcoming World Cups if the international governing body moves forward with its plan to open its capital to private investors. The declaration came in a statement released Thursday following an emergency meeting.

UEFA, representing 55 European nations, "unanimously and unequivocally reject the proposal by FIFA to transfer parts of the ownership of the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors," the statement detailed. This move by FIFA, led by President Gianni Infantino, is seen as an attempt to commercialize the organization further, a direction that UEFA strongly opposes.

"Following today's discussion, no UEFA national team will participate in any FIFA competition as long as these proposals remain on the table," the European football authority concluded. The next major FIFA competition on the horizon is the Women's World Cup, scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2027. This firm stance by UEFA signals a significant rift between the continental confederations and FIFA over the future financial and ownership structure of the sport's premier events.
