UEFA to honour Nepal flood victims before Champions League matches

European football will fall silent for Nepal before every Champions League match this week. UEFA will also display a banner reading “You are not alone Nepal” as a sign of solidarity with people affected by the floods.

UEFA said the tribute would honour victims of the flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026. Aleksander Čeferin, the organisation’s president, said the gesture would reflect the support of Europe’s football community for victims and their families.

“The entire European football family will stand together before this week’s matches to express our deepest condolences and our support to the people of Nepal. We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath,” Čeferin said.

The tribute is scheduled to take place before all Champions League matches during the week. The 2026/27 league phase begins on Tuesday, September 8, with 36 teams entering the competition’s single-league format. Across eight matchdays, clubs will play 144 matches that determine their routes into the knockout phase. The final is scheduled for June 5, 2027, in Madrid.

The report said Nepal was observing a national day of mourning for victims of the disaster. It described a continuing search for missing hydropower workers feared trapped in tunnels, while flags flew at half-mast and candlelight vigils were planned. The disaster reportedly killed at least 1,398 people and left more than 5,500 missing, including about 800 foreigners.
