Uganda Private Schools Launch Seven Million Tree Campaign for Environmental Restoration

Private education stakeholders in Uganda have launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign, aiming to restore the country's environment by planting seven million trees. The initiative kicked off along the banks of River Nyamwamba in Kasese District, marking 33 years since Uganda's education sector was liberalized.

The campaign unites schools, students, teachers, and local communities in a collective effort to restore damaged ecosystems, safeguard water sources, reduce soil erosion, and enhance resilience to climate change. Organizers chose the River Nyamwamba site due to its history of devastating floods and severe bank degradation, highlighting the urgent need for environmental restoration.

Hasadu Kirabira, Chairperson of the National Private Educational Institutions Association (NAPEA), stated that schools have a responsibility beyond academics, emphasizing their active role in environmental protection. "This campaign is not only about planting trees; it is about securing the future of our children and our country. Every school should become a champion of environmental conservation by planting and nurturing trees in their communities," Kirabira urged.

Kirabira called for widespread participation from private schools across Uganda, stressing that environmental conservation requires a collaborative approach involving learners, teachers, parents, and local leaders. He expressed confidence that the seven million trees, if properly maintained, will significantly contribute to restoring landscapes, protecting water sources, and mitigating climate change impacts. The initiative is part of broader efforts by private educational institutions to foster sustainable development and empower young people as custodians of Uganda's natural resources.
