Uganda's Army Chief Declares 2031 Presidential Bid, Vows 90% Victory

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's army chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2031 elections. The 52-year-old made the announcement via social media, confirming long-standing speculation about his political ambitions.

Kainerugaba expressed strong confidence in his electoral prospects, predicting a decisive victory with 90% of the vote. He also indicated that his father, President Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, would play a significant role in his campaign, referring to him by the honorific "Mzee" and stating he would be his campaign manager.

This announcement brings the issue of political succession in Uganda back into sharp focus. Kainerugaba has been widely viewed as a potential successor to his father for years. In addition to his military role, he also leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political pressure group.

Kainerugaba had previously suggested he might contest the 2026 election but later withdrew his candidacy to support his father's successful re-election bid. President Museveni, 81, is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders, and constitutional changes have removed presidential term and age limits, allowing him to remain in office. The possibility of Museveni seeking re-election in 2031, at age 86, remains uncertain, but Kainerugaba's declaration ensures the question of power transition will continue to be a subject of discussion.
