Uganda: Schools Boost Health Precautions Amid Ebola Vigilance

Educational institutions across Uganda are implementing heightened health measures as the academic semester commences, driven by a need for preparedness against potential Ebola risks. While no outbreaks have been confirmed in schools, administrators are proactively enhancing safety protocols.

Coordinated with national health authorities, these measures include improved hygiene systems with more handwashing stations and sanitizers. Disinfection of shared spaces like classrooms and dormitories is more frequent. Health screenings, including temperature checks, are now standard at entry points, with individuals showing symptoms directed to medical evaluation or self-isolation.

Awareness campaigns are also being amplified to educate students and staff on Ebola transmission, prevention, and early warning signs. Specialized training is provided to key staff for identifying and responding to suspected cases. Institutions have developed contingency plans for isolation, emergency response, and communication with health officials.

Academic leaders stress the importance of balancing health and safety with uninterrupted learning. "Our priority is the health and safety of our students and faculty. We are working diligently to create a secure learning environment, balancing academic continuity with the imperative to protect public health," said Dr. Richmond Wandera, Vice-Chancellor of Cornerstone University. He added that the reopening signifies a return to academic activity and a demonstration of resilience, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance.
