UK-based Nigerian mum dies by suicide after mental health struggle

A coroner's court in the United Kingdom has ruled that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian woman, died by suicide following a battle with mental health challenges. Solomon had relocated from Nigeria to the UK in November 2023 on a skilled worker visa.

Her husband, Damian Butler, found her unresponsive in their home on Norris Road, Stanfield, after returning from his delivery job. Emergency responders arrived but pronounced Beatrice dead at the scene. Investigators confirmed there was no third-party involvement in her death.

During the inquest, Butler testified that his wife had struggled with her mental health over the past year, attributing some issues to ongoing problems with Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also revealed that Beatrice had made two previous suicide attempts. A post-mortem examination determined that she died from oxygen deprivation.

Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor concluded that Beatrice had researched and planned her suicide, extending sincere condolences to her family and friends. Beatrice, who worked as a caregiver, is survived by her husband, a son, and her siblings.
