UK Braces for Bank Holiday Weekend of Thunderstorms and Rain

The United Kingdom is bracing for a mixed bag of weather this bank holiday weekend, with forecasts predicting unsettled conditions including showers, longer periods of rain, and thunderstorms across much of the country. This change comes after a period of warm and dry weather that characterized much of the summer.

Eastern areas of England are under a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms until Friday morning, with potential for frequent lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds accompanying heavy rain. For the rest of Friday, showers and spells of rain are expected, particularly across western Scotland, Wales, and northwest England. Some of this wet weather may spread east later in the day, with thunderstorms possible in northeast England and eastern Scotland.

Temperatures are expected to feel fresher compared to recent warm and humid conditions. Friday highs are forecast around 20–23C (68-73F) in England and Wales, and 16–20C (61-68F) in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which are considered average for late August. The weather is predicted to remain unsettled through Saturday, Sunday, and Bank Holiday Monday, with sunny spells interspersed with heavy showers and a continued risk of thunderstorms, especially across England and Wales on Saturday.

Fresh westerly winds will contribute to a blustery feel throughout the weekend. Highs on Saturday are expected to be around 18-22C (64-72F) in England and Wales, and 16-19C (61-66F) further north. Sunday and Monday will continue to see changeable conditions, with further heavy showers, longer spells of rain, and a risk of thunderstorms. Monday is forecast to be wettest across Scotland, while England and Wales can anticipate a mix of sunshine and showers before more rain moves in from the west. Stronger winds are also possible in southern parts of the UK, with temperatures generally ranging from 16C to 23C (61-73F).

The RAC estimates that approximately 20 million car trips will be undertaken during the weekend, suggesting potentially challenging driving conditions for many travelers. Currently, no September heatwave is in sight, with low pressure expected to remain close to the UK, indicating a continuation of cooler, windier, and wetter weather compared to the record-breaking summer experienced earlier.
