UK Citizen Arrested in Montenegro for Attempted Bribery, Barricading Family in Car

Montenegrin police arrested a 40-year-old British citizen, identified as B.F., in Herceg Novi on suspicion of offering a bribe. The incident began when police observed B.F. committing a traffic violation by crossing a solid line.

Upon being stopped in Meljine, B.F. attempted to bribe the officer to avoid a citation. Despite being warned that his actions constituted a criminal offense, he persisted, holding out cash and demanding to be allowed to continue his journey. Following this, B.F. locked himself inside his vehicle, which also contained his wife and two minor children, refusing to exit for approximately five hours.

Police officers exercised caution and patience, prioritizing the safety of the children. They engaged in negotiations with B.F., with an Albanian translator present. Around 4 a.m., B.F. voluntarily opened the vehicle doors and surrendered to the authorities without any force being used.

State prosecutors in Kotor have ordered B.F.'s detention for up to 72 hours as the investigation into the bribery charge continues. The arrest highlights the legal consequences of attempting to bribe law enforcement officials.
