UK Coroner Rules Nigerian Caregiver Died by Suicide Amid Mental Health Struggles

A UK coroner has ruled that Beatrice Solomon, a 27-year-old Nigerian woman, died by suicide following a battle with mental health challenges. Solomon had relocated to the United Kingdom on a skilled worker visa in November 2023.

Her husband, Damian Butler, discovered her unresponsive in their home on Norris Road, Stanfield, on March 4. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene. An investigation by police ruled out any third-party involvement in her death.

During the inquest, Butler testified that his wife had struggled with her mental health for the past year, attributing it to ongoing issues with Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also revealed that Beatrice had made two previous suicide attempts. Pathologist Dr. Jones's post-mortem examination indicated that she died from oxygen deprivation.

Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor concluded that Beatrice had researched and planned her death, extending condolences to her family. Beatrice, who worked as a caregiver, is survived by her husband, a son, and siblings. Her death underscores the significant emotional and mental health challenges some migrants encounter while adapting to life in a new country, including family separation, financial stress, and cultural barriers, as noted by the World Health Organization.
