UK Defence Secretary resigns, citing lack of resources

British Defence Secretary John Healey has resigned from the government, citing a lack of adequate funding for the nation's defense capabilities. In his resignation letter, Healey asserted that the government is "unable to free up the resources that the country needs." He stated, "I have no other choice than to resign."

Healey emphasized the need for increased investment in defense during "this new era for defense." He pointed to the Defense Investment Plan (DIP), developed in January, which outlines a 10-year budget and investment strategy for the military. However, he argued that the allocated budget is insufficient to implement the plan effectively. "In these dangerous times, that is not enough to keep the army functioning well and the country safe," Healey wrote. Internal documents suggest he requested over 30 billion euros more from the government.

The government reportedly proposed a limited investment increase of only 0.08 percent, which Healey deemed inadequate. His departure marks the sixth ministerial resignation from Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government and has come as a surprise. Healey had recently addressed parliament, promising to publish the Defense Investment Plan before the upcoming NATO summit.

Defense journalist Jonathan Baele commented that Healey never gave the impression he would resign, describing him as a loyal minister and a devoted member of the Labour Party. The prime minister is expected to appear weaker following this resignation. The UK faces ongoing debate about adapting its defense strategy to a changing security landscape, with the country falling behind other nations in defense spending, dropping from fourth to fourteenth place globally in five years.
