UK households could get £150 off energy bills: How to check eligibility

Millions of UK households may be eligible for a £150 reduction on their winter energy bills through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This support is available to approximately six million households that meet specific criteria. Ofgem is set to announce the quarterly energy price cap for the period from October onwards later this month, which will determine the level of winter energy prices.

Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount is linked to receiving certain government benefits. These include housing benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, and universal credit. For households to receive the discount automatically, their energy supplier must have more than 1,000 customers, and the eligible individual must be named on the electricity bill.

Energy companies can also offer additional support, such as repayment plans, to customers facing energy debt. The scheme is particularly important for individuals who may not be named on their electricity bill, such as those who have recently moved. Customers with pre-payment meters who use a key or card to top up their supply must ensure their account is registered in their name to qualify.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh urged the public to spread the word about the discount, encouraging eligible individuals to check their billing details. Additionally, 345,000 low-income households in Scotland will now automatically receive the rebate this winter, aligning Scotland's policy with that of England and Wales. Previously, Scottish households had to apply for the scheme separately.
