UK police arrest man over 'barbaric' knife attack in Belfast

Police in Belfast have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder following a "brutal" knife attack that left a victim in serious condition. The assault occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday in the Kinnaird Avenue area. The victim, who is in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with severe wounds to his face, neck, and back. Authorities have declared the incident a critical incident and launched an investigation into the motive. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson of the Police Service of Northern Ireland stated, "This brutal attack will have sent shockwaves through the community causing real concern." He assured the public that the investigation is proceeding with utmost seriousness. The arrested individual is a Sudanese man who remains in custody. An initial police statement incorrectly identified the suspect as Somalian, prompting a clarification. This attack occurs at a time of heightened sensitivity in Britain, partly due to the recent controversial death of student Henry Nowak. Nowak was handcuffed by police while dying from stab wounds after his attacker falsely claimed a racist motive. In the British parliament, lawmakers have called for greater transparency regarding the Belfast suspect's background, expressing concern that unconfirmed information could fuel speculation and exacerbate tensions surrounding immigration. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as "sickening," stating he has "no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence."
