UK police hunt Nigerian man after prison escape

British police have launched an extensive manhunt for Temitope Segun, a 25-year-old Nigerian-born prisoner who escaped custody in south-east London. Segun was serving a sentence for supplying Class A drugs when he absconded on Monday, June 8, 2026.

A incident occurred on the evening of Monday 8 June in Woolwich. The matter is under investigation.

The escape occurred while Segun was being transported from Bromley Magistrates’ Court to HMP Thameside in a prison transport van operated by private contractor Serco. According to the Metropolitan Police, Segun allegedly overpowered a guard inside the van near Woolwich High Street around 18:40 BST before fleeing the scene.

Serco confirmed its involvement in the prisoner escort and stated that the incident is under investigation. A spokesperson for the company reported that one staff member sustained injuries during the escape and is currently recovering at home. The company is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers. Police have identified potential links to the areas of Plumstead, Abbey Wood, and Woolwich and are urging anyone with information to contact them immediately via 999.
