UK politician Ann Widdecombe hit 21 times with hammer, prosecutors allege

Former British politician Ann Widdecombe was allegedly attacked 21 times with a hammer as she ate lunch at her home, a prosecutor told Westminster Magistrates' Court. Joshua Kerry, 28, appeared before the court charged in connection with her murder, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the public and political circles.

Prosecutor Kashif Malik stated that Kerry allegedly drove to Widdecombe's isolated village home on July 8, entered the house, and attacked her with a hammer. The attack, which reportedly lasted only two minutes, was followed by the theft of her wallet. Blunt force injury to the head was provisionally listed as the cause of death.

Kerry was arrested on suspicion of murder and acts of terror. Investigators are exploring his motive, considering potential political or terrorist links. He confirmed his identity in court but did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody pending a further appearance on October 9.

Widdecombe, 78, was a prominent figure known for her socially conservative views during her time as a Member of Parliament and government minister from 1987 to 2010. After leaving Parliament, she gained public recognition through reality television shows and later became involved with the Brexit Party and Reform UK, often speaking on immigration and justice issues.

Her killing has reignited concerns regarding the safety of politicians in the UK, following the murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and David Amess in 2021. Security measures for politicians have been a subject of increased scrutiny in recent years.
