UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosting Volodymyr Zelensky as first foreign visitor

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as his first international visitor on Monday, a move his office stated underscores London's unwavering support for Ukraine. The meeting is scheduled to take place at a naval base, where both leaders will witness firsthand the impact of UK-led training programs designed to bolster Ukraine's armed forces and achieve battlefield successes.

Downing Street indicated that the visit aims to demonstrate Britain's steadfast commitment to Ukraine. "Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering," Burnham stated. "Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve, and we will not back down until we achieve long-lasting and just peace for Ukraine."

During the visit, Burnham and Zelensky will engage with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel and sailors. These individuals have recently completed a three-week intensive training program in Britain, known as Exercise Sea Breeze. This maritime security and counter-mine exercise is specifically tailored to prepare participants for future operational missions in the Black Sea.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the UK has committed substantial resources to Ukraine. According to Burnham's office, the total support package has reached £25 billion, comprising £16 billion in military assistance and £5.6 billion in non-military aid. This ongoing commitment follows previous pledges, including former Prime Minister Keir Starmer's commitment of €300 million to equip Ukraine with a squadron of 16 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets shortly before his departure from office.
