UK student visa: Botswana, Mauritius, Tunisia exempt from upfront proof of funds

The United Kingdom has revised its financial requirements for student visa applicants, a move that significantly impacts many African nations. While stricter evidence rules remain, only citizens of Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia are exempt from submitting proof of funds upfront.

This updated guidance means that students from major African countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa will still need to provide detailed financial documentation with their applications. The UK government clarified that even exempted applicants must meet all financial requirements and may be asked to provide evidence later in the process.

The new rules specify the amounts applicants must demonstrate for tuition fees and living expenses. Students studying outside London need to show £1,171 per month for up to nine months, while those in London require £1,529 monthly. Additional funds are necessary for applicants with dependants, with specific amounts set for those studying inside and outside the capital.
