UK Train Collision Kills Driver, Injures 89

A severe train collision north of London on Friday evening has claimed the life of a train driver and left 89 people injured, some critically. The accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time (00:15 GMT Saturday) outside Bedford, involving two trains that were both heading south towards London St. Pancras station.

Emergency services responded swiftly, deploying over 20 ambulances and six air ambulances to the scene. Authorities have declared it a major incident. "We know that multiple people have been injured, and we are very sorry to report that one person has died," a police spokesperson stated. The injured were categorized by rescue services, with 11 in very serious condition, 22 seriously injured, and 56 with minor injuries.

One passenger described the terrifying moments of impact. "I was thrown forward into the seat in front of me, and then I saw smoke... people were crying, screaming. Everyone was very scared and confused," he recounted. Upon standing, he observed many individuals unable to speak, some with broken legs. Social media images showed dozens of people, some bandaged, standing or sitting near emergency vehicles on the railway line.

The trains involved were operated by East Midlands Railway. One departed from Corby at 4:40 p.m., and the other from Nottingham at 3:50 p.m., both bound for the same London station. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
