UK Unveils TigerShark Long-Range Attack Drone Developed by F1 Engineers

British engineers with experience in Formula 1 racing have developed a new long-range strike drone called the TigerShark. MGI Engineering announced that the drone will be available starting in October 2026. The TigerShark can fly up to 900 kilometers and reach speeds of 750 kilometers per hour, carrying a modular payload of 300 kilograms that can include high-explosive warheads or electronic warfare equipment.

The drone is intended as a "one-way" strike weapon, similar to a cruise missile, designed to attack distant targets or those protected by air defense systems. A key feature is its ability to navigate autonomously even when GPS signals are jammed or spoofed. MGI states the system uses inertial navigation combined with terrain comparison technology, allowing onboard sensors to identify terrain and correct course without relying solely on satellite navigation.

This autonomous navigation capability is particularly relevant in the context of electronic warfare seen in conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war. While traditional GPS-dependent drones may deviate from their course when signals are disrupted, the TigerShark aims to maintain its flight and attack capabilities through self-navigation. The autonomous system was developed with assistance from software company Auterion.

The TigerShark can be launched from a mobile ground vehicle using rocket-assisted takeoff and is powered by twin-turbofan engines, eliminating the need for a runway. MGI also highlighted the system's capability for salvo launches, enabling multiple drones to attack simultaneously and overwhelm enemy air defenses. The development is linked to the UK Ministry of Defence's "Project BRAKESTOP," which aims to accelerate the development of long-range autonomous strike weapons. MGI has a development contract for this project and demonstrated the TigerShark to the ministry in June 2026. The drone completed its first flight test in April 2026, with expanded production expected in the fourth quarter and deliveries beginning in October. All units are manufactured in the UK and are available for export to allied nations.
