Ukraine: Kyiv hit by new Russian missile and drone attack

Russia has again targeted Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, with a barrage of missiles and drones, according to warnings issued by the Ukrainian Air Force on the Telegram platform. The Kyiv Independent reported hearing "a series of explosions," with eyewitnesses on social media also confirming the sounds of detonations.

The full scope of the attack and its consequences remained unclear in the early hours of the morning. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had cautioned on Saturday evening about the possibility of a Russian assault employing the particularly feared new Oreshnik medium-range missile. He indicated that Kyiv was also under threat, citing intelligence assessments.

Zelenskyy warned of a potential combined Russian assault using various weapon types and urged citizens to seek shelter in bunkers during air alerts. Russia has previously deployed the ballistic missile, known for its significant destructive power, twice during its war in Ukraine. It was used once in the southeastern city of Dnipro without warheads and, most recently, in western Ukraine in January.
